Author Spotlight: Dawn Sullivan

About the Author:
I have a wonderful, supportive husband and three beautiful children.  I enjoy spending time with all of them which normally involves some baseball, shooting hoops, taking walks, watching movies, and of course reading.

My passion for reading began at a very young age and only grew over time.  Whether I was bringing home a book from the library, or sneaking one of my mom's romance novels and reading by the light in the hallway when we were supposed to be sleeping, I always had a book.

I read several different genres and subgenres, but Paranormal Romance and Romantic Suspense have always been my favorites.  I read anything by Katie Reus, Lora Leigh, J.R. Ward and Rebecca Zanetti.

I have always made up my own stories, and have just recently decided to start sharing them.  I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.

When Serenity’s demons from her past come back to haunt her, Phoenix must keep her safe not only from the General, but also from her past if they want a future together.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write your first book?
Recently I became good friends with an author in my home town.  She inspired me to follow through with my dreams and self-publish my first book.  If it wasn't for her continued help and support, along with the daily encouragement of a couple of close friends, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? Why are they your favorite?
I am not ashamed to admit that I think of Phoenix as my book boyfriend.  I love all of my characters, but he is my absolute favorite.  Who wouldn’t love a hot, take charge alpha character with sexy as sin tattoos and a sensitive soul?

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
I actually put a lot of thought into my character’s names.  I choose names that I personally love, ones that jump out and grab my attention.  Normally I come up with the names myself, however I have googled various names before.  I do not use any particular resources besides google at this time, though.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would you choose to play your characters?
These would be my picks at this time for my RARE characters.  Many of you who have read Nico’s Heart might have a different opinion, but when I picture RARE, this is close to what I see.  And let’s face it, who wouldn’t love Channing Tatum in anything?  And Nina Dobrev looks exactly how I picture Rikki in my head.

Angel:  Cameron Diaz
Nico:  Channing Tatum
Phoenix:  Andrew McLaren
Rikki:  Nina Dobrev
Jaxson:  Ryan Reynolds
Trace:  Shemar Moore

How does your work differ from others of its genre?
I love a lot of action and suspense in a story, and I think I probably have more than most “romance” books do.  I can’t seem to write a story without something happening.  I tried to write a romance novel, but it is quickly becoming a Romantic Suspense.

What are your current projects?
I am in the process of finishing up the second book in my RARE series, Phoenix’s Fate.  And of course, since Phoenix is my book boyfriend, I am absolutely in love with his story!  I have also started a new series featuring Chase’s White River Wolves.  I am about a quarter of the way into the first book, but I’m not ready to divulge any information on it just yet.  And to add to it, I have a Romantic Suspense novel in the works.  This one is going to take a little more time to write then the others, because I am so into my RARE characters that it’s hard to spend time on anything else.

If you didn't like writing books, what would you do for a living?
Writing is actually my part time gig right now.  I work full time for a title company assisting people buying/selling/refinancing their homes.  I am hoping to one day make writing my full time job.  It’s a dream of mine that I am getting closer to making happen!

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Sometimes my characters don’t always do what I think they are going to do, or what I think they should do.  Then it can change the whole direction of the story, which can be as exciting as it can be frustrating.

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?
My all-time favorite genres are Paranormal Romance and Romantic Suspense.  I love J.R. Ward, Katie Reus, Laura Wright, Donna Grant.  There are too many too mention.  But they have all been an inspiration to me.  I hope to one day inspire others as they have inspired me.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
The biggest thing is don’t give up.  If it is your dream to become a writer like it was mine, do whatever it takes to get your name out there and get your books published, whether it is through a publishing company or self-published like mine are.  As I mentioned before, if it wasn’t for the help of my fellow author and friend, Angela Fattig, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.  And I am LOVING where I am right now.  Follow your dreams, because they will come true.

What books have most influenced your life most?
I have been reading nonstop since I was a child.  You will never see me without a book near me.  When I pick up a book it’s like I’m jumping into someone else’s life and living it for a few hours.  But I only read fiction.  I love the fun and adventure that comes with it, and I always like to have a little romance added in.  I can’t say there has ever been one certain book that has influenced my life-the majority of the books I read have some sort of influence on me.  Normally it’s because they take me away to another place and let me live out a fantasy for hours on end.

Tell us something that might surprise our readers?
Nico’s Heart is the first actual book I have ever written.  I have written many stories in my head, but until Nico’s Heart, I have never actually sat down and put the words to paper.  I am so happy that I finally decided to share my stories with others, and I hope everyone enjoys them as much as I do.
